Mammography

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can detect cancers so small that even the most experienced examiner cannot feel them.

Yearly mammography, along with monthly breast self-exams, are vital in the fight against breast cancer. The American Cancer Society offers the following guidelines to women who are symptom free:

  • - Women 20 and older should perform breast self-examinations every month.
  • - Women 20-39 should have a physical breast examination every three years, and women 40 and older should have one every year.
  • - Women 40 and older should have a mammogram every year, or more often for women at increased risk.
  • - Women with personal or family histories of breast cancer should consult their doctors about the need for more frequent or earlier mammography.

Vidant Health offers 2D and 3D digital mammography.

Digital mammography benefits the patient by offering:

  • Quicker exams. Reduced times between exposures allows several exposures per minute. State-of-the-art precision and intuitive operation means faster, more efficient exams with few retakes.
  • Patient-friendly design. Flexible, off-centered, ergonomic paddles. Curved, comfortable design.
  • Easy wheelchair access. Easier access to the system for patient and technologist.
  • Full-field. In just a single exposure, our digital mammography machine can accommodate a great diversity of shapes and sizes. This means larger breasts that previously took two exposures per view, can now be imaged in one.

3D mammography takes imaging a step further. The scanner uses a low-dose short X-ray sweep around the positioned breast with nine exposures. Taking images from various angles reduces blur and increased sharpness, which improves doctors’ ability to detect small tumors and reduce false scares.

The following Vidant Health facilities offer 2D and 3D mammography services:
